Rock
far from my angel (rich mcculley). this is the title cut from Rich's record. I co-wrote this tune with rich. Kind of an up-tempo Wilco meets the Replacements rocker.
stumbling to start: (rich mcculley) Sort of a Counting Crows feel with a big dose of 70's FM radio.
forget me (rich mcculley). i was going for a country-ish vibe with brushes on the snare drum.
33 (Rich McCulley). We took it to Pepperland on this Beatles inspired tune that Rich and I wrote. That's me on the wurlitzer too! this was intended to be included on rich's cd, but didn't quite make the cut, so here it is, the world debut on my website.
don't blame me (Jeff Rolka). This is from Jeff's upcoming cd which Jeff and i produced. On this tune I borrowed heavily from Wilco's tune War on War and the Beatles' Ticket to Ride.
ELTYD (Jeff Rolka). Sort of a Jayhawks, Beatles, Wilco mix.
good angel (Jeff Rolka). This has got the quater -note shuffle that I learned playing with the Bloody Lovelies. Therešs some out-standing bass playing from Kevin White and Išm pretty proud of the drum-fills in the bridge and the outro.
gotta be real Duff. A somewhat funky pop tune written by LA-based singer/songwriter Duff Ferguson. I also produced this track.
rosy Duff. This is an upbeat pop rocker with a really contrasting verse and chorus. To show this contrast, I combined two completely different drum takes: one standard high fidelity studio performance on the chorus, bridge, outro etc... and one very low fi recording with brushes on the first two verses.
Soul/Funky/R&B
Wages of Sin (PC munoz and the amen corner) I was going for a heavier rock vibe on this soulful tune.
High Minded Man (PC Munoz and the Amen Corner). I was trying to go for a live sounding contemporary R&B feel--think Brand New Heavies and Mint Condition.
life ahead of us "Young Zombies in Love" This was a really fun tune from an original rock musical here in San Fran. The song writer, Gaby Alter, was going for a funk meets the Beatles vibe.
Blues
Leave it That Way (Delta Wires) Old school 12/8 blues feel on this one.
After Me You're First (Delta Wires) Straight ahead blues shuffle; think Art Blakey meets BB King.
Before You Go (The High Rollers) I borrowed the groove from Dr. John's tune Junko Partner for the verses of this one.
She's Out the Door (Delta Wires) I came up with the N'awlins inspired funky groove for the verses and it's straight ahead swingin' shuffle for the solos. That's Pete Escovedo on congas!
Drum Solo
Mr. Magic Drum Solo Live at the Blue Lamp. Okay, it's a boombox recording, but I was feelin' it! This Funky groove was from my regular Wednesday night gig at the old Blue Lamp in San Fran.
